Owen Barfield was one of the Oxford Inklings. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien said he was the most innovative, in part because he had an inspiring answer to this question.
He argued that Jesus launched a new perception of what it is to be human. It gave birth to a civilisation. Now that perception is changing again. It’s another step in the spiritual evolution of humanity and illuminates not only what Christianity first offered but what it might offer now.
