Join us at the Idler Spring Retreat in Umbria for a week of idling at its most fun and fulfilling. We’ll learn about philosophies that can help us flourish, we’ll see some of the very greatest Renaissance art, and we’ll read, walk, loaf and feast in good company.

In the company of the Idler‘s editor Tom Hodgkinson and Academy director Victoria Hull, we’ll be exploring the Philosophy of the Romantics.

Poet Murray Lachlan Young with entertain us with a private live performance. He’ll give us insights from his own life as a poet. He’ll talk about sources of inspiration, about the processes of writing poetry and of performing it live.

Dr Mark Vernon will give classes on the philosophy of the Romantic era and we’ll learn how it can help us flourish today.

Tom will discuss idling in the Romantic poets, from Blake’s horror of Moloch and the machine to Wordsworth and Coleridge’s revolutionary Lyrical Ballads to Keats’s praise of indolence.

You’ll read, walk, loaf and feast together. There will be walking trips in the Umbrian hills and a trip to San Sepolcro to see some of the great local Renaissance art. There’s a tennis court, a swimming pool and a piano.
