The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri is many things: a personal crisis, a map of good and evil, an unsurpassed poem, an exploration of the true nature of love. At heart, as Dante described it, it is the realisation that “I am more than I am”, discovered by journeying in three domains of reality and becoming more capable of participating in God.

So, how can we learn from this perceptual expanse and grow into the part of affirmation promised?

This half day will examine the transformation Dante underwent, which human beings can still undergo. It will focus on the insights from Dante’s mystical intelligence and examine what they mean and ask of us.

The insights that emerge are dynamic and living: that descent and ascent are intimately linked; that time can be experienced in dramatically different ways; that virtues are crucial not so much for moral reasons but because they connect with reality; that freedom is fundamental though often misunderstood; that love is natural and can ultimately never let us down.

The sessions will assume no knowledge of The Divine Comedy because exploring, dwelling in and applying the teachings of the work is always best done afresh.

On this day you will:
– learn from the threefold structure of the Comedy
– hear about the teachings Dante receives on his pilgrimage
– consider the significance of the work’s tremendous images
– contemplate in the encounters that Dante has on the way
– be able to befriend afresh this work of spiritual genius
– have a chance to ask questions and hear the discussion
– spend time in the presence that Dante transmits
