Something is going wrong with Christianity. In the western world, it’s not hard to make the case that something’s gone terminally wrong. So how are we to understand this predicament and discern its meaning?
Drawing on ideas presented in my new book, I’ll turns to the Oxford Inkling, Owen Barfield, for answers. A close and deeply influential friend of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien,
Barfield developed a description of how human perceptions of nature and the divine change profoundly over time.
He then showed how Christianity is caught up in that evolution of consciousness. The story he tells greatly illuminates the times we find ourselves in now.
