Socrates was the teacher of Plato who was the teacher of Aristotle. But what Socrates taught is, of course, the wrong question. For, if there is one thing that Plato is quite clear about, it is that Socrates taught nothing. Something else is going on when you encounter this figure – which is probably why he is still alive in the collective consciousness after 2,500 years and, simultaneously, so wildly misunderstood.
